But on top of that, moving out into a place of his own implies a level of permanence that he isn't really ready to accept yet. The place is largely what the Up apartments would be by default, utilitarian is very much his thing, and if anything the Up in general is still far too much for him. Everything is perfectly and meticulously organized, there's an absence of clutter, and the only things that make the place feel more lived in are small details. The only thing Wash has apparently really added are some mats set out near the windows overlooking the city. It is probably of little surprise that someone like Wash would care a lot about some kind of exercise and working out.
