There is artistry in it, but it's similar to craftsmanship, for me. I like working with my hands, and this is just another way to do that. Being careful, deliberate, focused, on the rope, on another person.
I draw it out sometimes specifically to focus on them more. It's a state of mind I enjoy, and I tend to tailor things towards what my partner actually wants, as I work with them.
Follow what you like about it. If you like that it takes time and dedication, then I think you'd like learning the more complex patterns, and when you do that your knot work will improve naturally with it, too.
