The attention's deserved. Good work is still good work regardless of complexity. At a certain point it's just personal taste, aesthetic. An art as much as anything else -- or whatever else you may be trying to achieve.
I have never been an artist. Or more or less started because I must, but continued for other people. It is slower than one would think. It takes time and dedication. I like that.
There is artistry in it, but it's similar to craftsmanship, for me. I like working with my hands, and this is just another way to do that. Being careful, deliberate, focused, on the rope, on another person.
I draw it out sometimes specifically to focus on them more. It's a state of mind I enjoy, and I tend to tailor things towards what my partner actually wants, as I work with them.
Follow what you like about it. If you like that it takes time and dedication, then I think you'd like learning the more complex patterns, and when you do that your knot work will improve naturally with it, too.

What would you suggest I work on then? The artistry? The knots? Or more complex patterns?

So perhaps I should focus more on knots and tighter binds.
